A brush fire that broke out on Easter Sunday in upstate New York spread to a roofing business, and the plume of smoke could be seen from miles away.

The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office said a 911 caller reported a possible brush fire in the area of 2139 Lockport Road in Wheatfield at around 6 p.m. on Sunday. The fire was located near railroad tracks and the Blue Ox Roofing building.

Arriving officers confirmed an active fire near the railroad tracks had spread to a large pile of pallets bear the Blue Ox Roofing building. Firefighters arrived to the scene to find the fire had spread to Blue Ox Roofing with “heavy fire” at the rear of the building.

A video shared by X user @gailmariehs shows a large plume of black smoke rising from the scene of the fire. The video was taken from Seneca Niagara Casino about seven miles away.

The sheriff’s office said firefighters from “several” local departments responded to the scene and brought the fire under control. The Blue Ox Roofing building and a vehicle registered to the business sustained damage, the sheriff’s office said, but the value of damage was unknown.

The Niagara County Fire Investigation Unit is investigating the cause of the fire.
