With divorce rumors reaching fever pitch, former first couple Barack and Michelle Obama stepped out for a dinner date — but sources say it did little to quiet the noise.

The former president and his wife of 32 years caused a stir when they strolled into Italian hotspot Osteria Mozza in Washington, D.C., in mid-April, their first public outing since January.

Diners at the upscale eatery erupted into applause as they watched the Obamas make their way through the restaurant to a private dining room upstairs.

But once there, a source says the date turned sour.

“They barely even talked during dinner,” says the insider. “A knife couldn’t have cut through the tension between them.”

As The National ENQUIRER previously revealed, sources claim the two are already leading separate lives, with Michelle, 61, chasing Hollywood dreams while Barack, 63, stays tied to politics on the East Coast.

“They made a show of themselves to try to dampen the noise,” says the source. “They want to control the narrative.”

They looked like a happy couple as they walked through the restaurant smiling, but it was apparently all for show.

“As soon as they sat down and it was just staff in the room, the smiles dropped from their faces,” says our insider. “It was pretty obvious that they were having some sort of argument.”

Sources previously revealed that the couple’s united front shattered when Michelle refused to run for president in 2024, leading to Donald Trump’s victory.

Now, they’re reportedly locked in secret divorce negotiations that turned bitter after Barack demanded a bigger share of their $70 million fortune.

Sources say the struggling couple — parents to daughters Malia, 26, and Sasha, 23 — had originally planned to announce an amicable split at the end of last summer. But tensions over profits from their Higher Ground production company and their $11.75 million Martha’s Vineyard estate are expected to spark a nasty financial battle.

“It’s no secret things are not going well for these two right now,” says the insider. “This dinner only showed how much their relationship has deteriorated.”
