Three Kentucky teens were recognized Tuesday for their heroic actions when a car crashed into the Ohio River last month.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg during his weekly press conference on Tuesday presented the Distinguished Citizen Proclamation to Pleasure Ridge Park High School students Abraham Cruz, Jacob Cruz and Kenay Valdez for their heroism.

The boys were fishing nearby when they saw a car go into the Ohio River near the Greenwood Boat Ramp, and they immediately sprang into action, swimming to the vehicle and rescuing the driver. With the help of bystanders, they also secured a rope to the vehicle to prevent it from floating away.

“These three young men did not hesitate to act. They didn’t hesitate to help a person in need. They saved a life,” Greenberg said. He encouraged them to consider careers with Louisville Metro Police, Louisville Fire, or Metro Emergency services when they’re older.

“You’ve shown us what you could do,” Greenberg said. “We hope to other young folks around the entire city who we hope also join you in your path.”

“We are really, really thankful for everything that’s been going on since it happened. And I’m glad to meet you [Greenberg] and glad to have everyone here giving us this attention, because once again, we really didn’t think it was going to be this big,” Abraham Cruz said. “And, and if we ever have ever happens again, we would do it again.”
