Federal officials are offering a $20,000 reward for information about a suspect who decapitated a California sea lion on Christmas Day last year.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Law Enforcement said a member of park staff discovered the headless sea lion at Doran Regional Park in Bodega Bay on Dec. 25, 2024.

An eyewitness saw the suspect use a black, 8-inch knife to remove the sea lion’s head, then put it into a clear plastic bag before riding away on a black, fat-tire e-bike. The suspect is described as a tan man, 30–40 years old, dressed in all black.

The Marine Mammal Protection Act prohibits the harassment, hunting, capturing, or killing of sea lions and other marine mammals. Authorities are offering a $20,000 reward for information that leads to a criminal conviction or civil penalty.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the case is asked to call NOAA’s 24/7 hotline at (800) 853-1964.
