New York City fire officials are once again asking people not to park next to fire hydrants after two people died in a three-alarm fire early Wednesday.

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire at 2086 Anthony Avenue in the Bronx at around 6 a.m. Wednesday and arrived in four minutes to find heavy fire in two buildings. The fire was upgraded to a third alarm, with more than 40 fire and EMS units responding, with 150 fire and EMS personnel.

FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito said at a press conference that there were two fatalities in the first building that caught fire.

EMS Chief Mark Bonilla said one of the victims was found deceased at the scene. The second victim was transported to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.

“We did unfortunately have a car parked on the closest fire hydrant,” Esposito said. “Weve seen that now a couple of times in the last week throughout the city. We all know that we should not be parking on fire hydrants and when you park on fire hydrants, it slows us down. When were fighting a fire, seconds count.”

Residents displaced by the fire were being assisted at the scene by the Red Cross and New York City Emergency Management.

FDNY Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.
