Authorities in North Carolina working on an ongoing investigation found 148 pounds of methamphetamine hidden within stone landscaping pavers.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said that on Feb. 12, its drug unit was conducting a followup investigation in Pantego, N.C., based on information received following a Jan. 16 arrest made by the Greenville Regional Drug Task Force in neighboring Pitt County.

Beaufort County investigators and K-9 Athos inspected several pallets of stone landscaping pavers, and Athos alerted to the presence of narcotics. Further physical inspection revealed one of the stone pavers contained 800 grams of crystal methamphetamine encased in the concrete.

After unloading all the pallets, a total of 84 stone pavers were found, each containing 800 grams of methamphetamine. In total, the pavers contained 67 kilograms (148 pounds) of meth, which was seized by investigators.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is still ongoing, with support from the Greenville Regional Drug Task Force, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Raleigh, and other agencies.

Beaufort Sheriff Scott Hammonds is asking anyone with information regarding suspected drug sales or any other crime to contact the Beaufort County Sheriffs Office at (252) 946-7111 or to submit an anonymous tip.
