An investigation is underway after a boat crashed into a ferry with more than 40 people on board offshore Florida on Sunday night, resulting in multiple injuries and at least one fatality, authorities said.

Clearwater Fire and Rescue and the Clearwater police Department responded to the boat crash at the Clearwater Memorial Causeway bridge at 8:43 p.m. Sunday. Police said a boat struck the Clearwater ferry, which had 40 people on board, then fled the scene just south of the bridge.

The fire department declared a mass casualty incident. Six patients were declared trauma alerts, two of whom were transported to the hospital by helicopter. One person later died from his injuries.

It is believed that all people aboard the ferry were accounted for, the fire department said.

The crash is being investigated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard.
